Information about Turkish carpets and their beginnings

Carpet weaving is a traditional art that dates back to pre-Islamic times. Throughout its long history, the art and craft of woven carpets has combined different cultures.
It combined Byzantine design with Turkish immigrants from Central Asia, Armenians, Caucasians and Kurds.
With the advent of Islam and the development of Islamic art, Turkish carpet design was influenced by Islamic art. The designs and motifs of Turkish carpets reflect the political and ethnic history and diversity of the Asia Minor region. However, scientific attempts have so far failed to distinguish their designs according to ethnicity or region or even between urban and nomadic styles. When contact between Western Europe and the Islamic world became active during the Crusades, woven carpets also became known in Europe. After the establishment of a direct trade line between Europe and the Ottoman Empire, all types of carpets became known in Europe as Turkish carpets, regardless of their actual origin.
Among the types of oriental carpets, Turkish carpets have certain characteristics in terms of dyes, colors, designs, textures and techniques.  It is usually made of wool and cotton, and is tied together with Turkish or symmetrical knots.
Its sizes vary from pillow-sized to room-sized. The oldest known pieces date back to the 13th century AD, and were woven in workshops, villages, or among tribes and nomads.
It was also made for use by different classes of society, from various materials such as sheep's wool and cotton. There is no evidence of its manufacture from silk before 1870 AD, as Turkish silk carpets were woven at the beginning of the 20th century, decorated with gold and silver thread motifs.

Types of Turkish carpets

We will show the most important types of Turkish carpets:

Hereke carpet
Hereke carpet, which took its name from the region where it is made, Hereke, on the coast of the Turkish city of Kocaeli.
It is considered one of the finest and oldest types of carpets in Turkey, as the history of silk carpet manufacturing dates back to the ancient Turkish tribes and is an original example of the type of carpet with captivating decorations.
Hereke carpets are woven from silk threads and by hand machines and are distinguished by their quality and elegance. This type of carpet is sometimes bought to be presented as gifts to others. Silk carpets were also used as a basic decoration in Ottoman palaces.

Yagcıbedir Carpet
Yağcıbedir carpets were woven in and around the Bigadiç area of Balikeşehir in Western Anatolia by nomadic people from the highlands.
It is one of the most distinctive types of hand-made wool carpets in Turkey and is characterized by its simple decorations and dark colors.

Gaziantep is one of the most important Turkish provinces in the carpet industry. It is ranked as the sixth largest city in Turkey in terms of carpet production.

The city contains more than 350 factories for the manufacture of carpets of various types and sizes in addition to the manufacture of carpets.

Thus, it is possible to define Turkish carpet weaving in four clear main lines.

- The first: Hereke carpets, which are a .continuation of Ottoman palace carpets The second: Turkish carved carpets - designed to understand Western patterns such as Isparta, Bonyan and Sivas carpets.

- The third: Local carpet types including Gordes, Kula, Bergama, Mugur, Melas, Yacı Bedir and many others.

- The fourth: Local carpets woven by people for their own needs, which are the most common types of carpets in Turkey. Which are made in Kale Denizli, Adıyaman Beshnik, to Kahta and Beshni in Agrı, Kars, Erzurum, Shanlıurfa and Gaziantep.

With the possibilities of modern technology, the carpet industry is constantly renewed and a variety of carpets are produced according to the needs. However, hand-woven carpets have a special appeal.
