What is a herniated disc?

A prolapsed disc is a problem with the rubber cushions (discs) between the vertebrae of the spine.
A herniated disc is also known as a slipped disc, a herniated disc, a prolapsed disc, a ruptured disc, or a slipped disc.

The disc between the vertebrae of the spine is somewhat similar to a donut, as it has a soft core made of a gelatinous substance, and is covered by a harder outer part.
A slipped disc and disc occur when the soft core is pushed out through a tear in the harder outer part.

A slipped disc can affect the surrounding.
Nerves and cause pressure on them, which leads to the symptoms of a herniated disc, the most important of which is pain, numbness.
Or weakness in the arm or leg depending on the location of the disc in which the herniated disc occurred.

In most cases of a herniated disc or slipped disc, the disc will return to its original position with proper care. However, sometimes a slipped disc requires further treatment or orthopedic and spinal surgery to correct the problem.

A herniated disc can occur in different places in the vertebrae of the spine, and a disc in the neck can slip.
Symptoms of a disc in the neck may extend to other parts of the body.
Neck disc pain may extend from the back of the neck to the arms and fingers, and the range of motion of the neck may decrease and the pain increases with each movement of the neck, or when coughing or sneezing.

Types of disc

The disc can be divided according to the type of slippage that occurs in the disc between the vertebrae of the spine into three degrees.
The disc can also be named according to the location of the affected vertebrae. The degree of herniated disc is divided into:
First degree: The nucleus pulposus protrudes into the vertebral canal, which is a gel-like substance that occupies the center of the disc in the middle of the annulus fibrosus.
Without affecting the annulus fibrosus and the posterior longitudinal ligament. The herniation of the nucleus pulposus can be lateral or on the midline, single or multiple.
Second degree: The annulus fibrosus ruptures and a portion of it exits with the nucleus into the vertebral canal.
The annulus fibrosus is the part that connects the bodies of one of the two vertebrae of the spine and is in the shape of a ring.
It is composed of elastic fibers surrounding the nucleus pulposus.
Third degree: Most of the contents of the disc exit through the torn posterior longitudinal ligament into the vertebral canal.
